Bio. I'm a researcher in the AIML lab and the junior research group leader of the Open World Lifelong Learning (OWLL) group at the Computer Science Department of TU Darmstadt and hessian.AI. I'm also a board member of directors at the non-profit ContinualAI organization.
Previously, I've received my Computer Science PhD with highest honors from Goethe University and an award for the best natural science PhD thesis at Goethe Uni in 2021. Before that, I also received Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Physics.

Mission. My research interest spans various aspects of machine learning and artificial intelligence. I'm generally fond of the advances brought on by deep learning approaches and generative modelling, yet am also cautious about the unmentioned assumptions, underlying unresolved scientific questions and the many persisting caveats. The main goal of my research, as implied by my junior research group's name, is to develop systems that can learn from data continually over time while exploring an open world in a robust way with human understandable failure modes. As the world is constantly changing, open world lifelong learning envisions to enable our next wave of AI systems to autonomously adapt to these changes. Our central hypothesis is that this can only be achieved if we incorporate a wholistic view, which incorporates a dynamic perspective on evolving data, adaptive models, and changing evaluation requirements, natively into the design process.

Teaching. I recently gave a openly accessible 13 week long course on the topic of open world lifelong learning, with materials accessible on the website and respective lecture videos available on YouTube.
